Exif Data Viewer Privacy Policy
Exif Data Viewer is a desktop app that reads the metadata of your photos and videos on your own computer. This policy explains what it does, and does not, do with your data.
What Exif Data Viewer does with your files
When you open a photo or video, the app reads its metadata locally using a bundled copy of ExifTool that runs entirely on your machine. The file and everything read from it stay on your computer. Nothing is uploaded, and no copy is sent anywhere.
The app keeps a short list of recently opened files so you can reopen them quickly. This list is stored only on your own device using the operating system's standard app storage, and it clears entries automatically when the file no longer exists.
Removing sensitive data
Exif Data Viewer can remove sensitive metadata (GPS coordinates, camera serial numbers, owner name) from a file. This happens entirely on your device by rewriting the file locally. When you ask it to remove that data it can keep a backup of your original file next to it, at your choice. We never receive the file, the original, or anything that was removed.
What Exif Data Viewer does not do
- It does not send your files or their metadata to us or to any third party.
- It does not use any analytics, tracking, or telemetry.
- It has no servers and makes no network requests to read or process your files.
- It does not require an account or collect any personal information.
- It does not sell or share data with anyone.
Tips and in-app purchases
If you choose to leave a tip, the payment is handled entirely by the platform's app store (for example the Mac App Store) under its own privacy terms. Exif Data Viewer never sees your payment details. Tips are optional and unlock nothing, they simply say thanks.
Reverse geocoding (place names)
When a photo contains GPS coordinates, the app can show a map pin and the name of the place. Turning those coordinates into a place name uses the operating system's built-in mapping service (Apple Maps on macOS), governed by the platform's own privacy policy. This only happens for files you open, and only to display the location to you.
Changes
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL (javi.link/exif-data-viewer/privacy) with a new date.
